The Mohawk Valley Region is an outdoor lover’s paradise, blessed with an abundance of destinations and events for anglers, boaters, campers, canoers, cyclists, golfers, hikers, hunters, kayakers, runners, skiers, snowmobilers – name it. Together with its affordable housing, excellent schools and proximity to major Northeastern metropolitan areas, the Mohawk Valley is an ideal place to live and to do business.

The Region encompasses a 5,243-square-mile area along the Mohawk River, spanning from the Adirondack foothills at its northern edge to the Catskill Mountains in the south. Its counties include: Oneida, Herkimer, Otsego, Fulton, Montgomery and Schoharie. Historically, the region’s development was fueled by the construction and operation of the Erie Canal and its feeders, which facilitated industrialization and immigration from Amsterdam to Utica and beyond.

The Mohawk Valley’s half-million residents live at the geographic center of New York State. The cities of Syracuse, Rochester, Albany, Buffalo, New York, Boston, Philadelphia and Montreal are all within a 250-mile radius. But you needn’t travel far to witness induction ceremonies at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, to enjoy a night of casino entertainment, to tour one of several independent breweries or to partake of an elegant lakeside meal in the “forever wild” Adirondack Park – the largest park in the contiguous United States.

Home to nearly 30,000 students at nine universities and community colleges, the region’s economic strengths include Distribution, Materials Processing, Industrial Machinery and Services, Financial Services and Information and Technology. Because of a growing concentration in Information and Technology, along with the existence of a promising large site, the most significant aspiration of the region is to transform its economy through the attraction of nanotechnology employers and their support networks.
